India & The Great War
There has been much activity over the last two years to raise an awareness of the role of the soldiers, sailors and airmen from undivided India who served in the First World War.
These efforts continue with a series of conferences and symposia to which IMHS members make a contribution.
We shall continue to advertise and report on these events wherever possible.
In a related project, and acknowledging that the UK and many other Commonwealth countries recognise 11th November as Remembrance Day, it has been felt that India needed to dedicate a specific day of remembrance of its own to acknowledge the sacrifice of Indian servicemen and women in various conflicts since 1914. To this end the USI Centre for Armed Forces Historical Research (CAFHR) is proposing the 'India Remembers' project, the creation of a National Day of Remembrance, with the symbol of the Marigold flower rather than the poppy, and to be held on 7th December annually to coincide with Armed Forces Flag Day. More on this as it develops.
The Jullundur Project
This is a collaborative effort by The Duke of Lancaster′s Regiment, descendants of 1st Battalion the Manchester Regiment [who with 47th Sikhs and 59th (Scinde) Rifles Frontier Force Regiment made up the main part of the Jullundur Brigade], the Lancashire County Council Heritage Learning Team and Year Six Primary School Pupils, from 14 schools in Lancashire and Greater Manchester. The culmination of the Jullundur Project is an amazing e learning resource pack, intended for primary schools nationally, though we understand it has also attracted international interest. The lesson plans are the work of the teachers but the historical pages are all the work of the children involved and the book deserves to be applauded for their magnificent effort. We are grateful to Major Bob Smethurst, Regimental Engagement & Employment Support Officer, RHQ The Duke of Lancaster′s Regiment for sharing it with us.
